Accepting Change & Changing Acceptance - Aaron Bailey

Aaron describes the project:

Like the swing of a pendulum back and forth, the dance of yin and yang, or opposite poles on the infinity symbol, the sway between change and acceptance' continually plays out.

I'm fascinated to explore these themes, their overlap (as one can lead to the other), contrast and complimentary nature, through insights from the lives of people living each purposefully.

Activists engage in the world, fuelled by passion and pursuit of meaningful change.

Mediators, and spiritual practitioners find serenity, and meaning in the moment through absolute acceptance of things as they are.

These two communities, as human beings and human doings, have wisdom to share with each other and our community. As both as activist and meditator myself, I see how complimentary these can be, how oppositional they can be understood to be... and how we can be more wholesome in both accepting and changing by learning from the other.

This project serves as a celebration and critique of both.

I’ve interviewed activists and contemplatives, and taken voice clips from these to create a narrative overlaid on a mix of musical tracks to produce introspective soundscapes to journey into each theme of change and acceptance. I've been absorbed in this exploration, living the questions rather than seeking answers. Whether you see change and acceptance as opposites, two sides of the same coin or just simply as states of being, I hope this enquiry into them supports your own.

This creative work has felt aligned to me exactly what I've been called to do in the world. Huge gratitude to all involved in every step. This project was made possible through Creative Ireland Tipperary and the Creative Communities fund, the support, wisdom and experience of those I had the privilege to interview, the artwork from Kevin Handy, and the music that I've found so moving see tracklist on MixCloud for specific credit to the artists featured (all were purchased where possible via Bandcamp).

This exploration was Inspired by these two quotes:

“I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.

Angela Davis (educator, scholar, and leader in the civil rights movement)

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Serenity Prayer.

Both pieces are around 20 minutes in length. It’s recommended to find a quiet, comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed, and listen with headphones
